Bondurant House is a 4000 sq. ft. home with 1850 sq. ft. of decks and covered porches. Property consists of the home and three outbuildings on 2.63 acres of land (excluding the Bondurant family cemetery). It is surrounded by wooded pasture less than one mile from a four-lane highway, US 460, about 45 minutes from Richmond, VA. Longwood University and Hampden Sydney College are a short drive through Farmville, Virginia. Saylers Creek Civil War battlefield is very close by, the Appomattox Treaty ground is to the west and the Petersburg battlefield areas are to the east. Many other tourism sites are within a reasonable drive from the home.
The house consists of two stories and a fully finished, heated and cooled basement. There are four bedrooms and three baths (one fully handicapped accessible). The main floor has two living rooms, a den, a family room and kitchen. It was was designed for large group entertaining, and the house could be easily converted into a bed and breakfast, with up to seven bedrooms and a basement attendant’s area.
The main floor is wheel chair accessible with a deck ramp into the kitchen. Besides the bathroom there are wide doors, hardwood floors, extra-firm carpets, extra-wide kitchen aisles, a double door refrigerator, a six-foot pullout table, pullout lower shelves, and a closet pantry. The east living room can be converted to a bedroom for a handicapped occupant. (The main staircase could not be widened, but the outside stairs to the upstairs porch and the upstairs hall were built extra-wide).
The home has been completely rebuilt on the sound frame of the pre-Civil War house. Most parts are new except for the 12x12 foot white oak and heart pine frame front structure and fireplaces. The original staircase, along with other items, were kept where possible, to add to the ambience. The rebuilding was completed in April 2003.
The original house was built in stages in the late 1800s with pre-used, but sound, materials. It was renovated in the 1920s and again in the 1970s when the downstairs brick and slate fireplace mantles were built. A 1920s addition was torn down and the new addition with full basement and decking was constructed from May 2002 to April 2003. During this construction the main house was structurally stabilized with a new foundation, sheathing, etc. The post and beam construction was solid, including cross bracing and joists; everything else was replaced to meet current codes.
